it was a quick tour, and there was a trophy on the line. with all four
members of the band vowing to take the coveted rocker of the tour trophy
home with them at tour's end, the competition was fierce as we landed in
frankurt, germany in mid-march.
as the last note of the last song of the last show was played in dresden, i
had the unenviable task of bestowing top honors on one of these four rock
gladiators. as the tour careened into the final night, it was a four-way tie
in rock points accrued. most nights, one person won rocker of the night.
other nights, no one did (because i couldn't see the stage from the merch
table!), some nights everyone won because they all rocked well.
and they did rock well, all of them. but this was a competition, and when it
was all said and done, mr. greg mytych was the chosen one.
"greg?" you ask incredulously. yes, greg. as we came down to the final
night, greg was quiet before the show; he said he was "getting in the zone."
whereas other people talked shit about how hard they would play or how i
should have seen them the night before, greg was focused. when the rock
started, he jumped around like a maniac. he played his bass so hard there
was blood on the strings and pickups. he rocked well. his backups sounded
good. he showed a marked improvement from the beginning of the tour, when he
seemed ill at ease and rusty. no more. this was the fabled kansas city mike
playing rock songs and enjoying himself. trusted sources close to this judge
even commented on how good his hair looked. it was hard to deny. also taken into
consideration was greg's overall attitude during the tour: positive, with a
minimal amount of shit-talking as to why he deserved the trophy.
and there it is. who will take the trophy home next tour? as usual, it's
anyone's game.
